Dodger deadline moves

user-pic
The deadline came and went. I'm not excited.
The Dodgers made a couple of moves before Saturday's Major League Baseball trade deadline, neither of which have me excited.
The Ryan Theriot for Blake DeWitt swap is pretty much a wash. Theriot has a higher average, they both have one home run, Theriot has way more stolen bases and DeWitt has a few more RBI's, doubles and triples. It's a wash. It just makes the team more right handed is what it does. Theriot is also going to be a little more expensive the next couple of years, but not too bad.
This clears the way for Ivan DeJesus to be the second baseman of the future, but I figured DeWitt would move to third when that happened.
Ted Lilly is obviously and upgrade to the rotation, but he's not going to rescue this sinking ship. If the Dodgers don't offer Lilly arbitration, the trade is a loss. Lilly will not accept arbitration, it's a guarantee. With it being a weak year for starting pitching, he'll hit the market and the Dodgers can net a first round pick.
The Octavio Dotel trade was ho hum as well. If the team was in the race this year, I'd be all for a move like this, but I much rather had seen how Andrew Lambo bounced back since the team isn't competing. But if the team was legitimately in the race, then trade Lambo for whatever.
I would have liked to have seen Manny moved for a stud young player. The Dodges need a young stud who is getting close. Hopefully a waiver move can be made as this team continues to fade in August.

The first one obviously comes this evening with the Dodgers acquiring Scott Podsednik.
I like what Podsednik can do for the team, but they overpaid. Maybe Lucas May didn't project to be a great Major League catcher, but between him and Ellis, the position would have been serviceable and allowed to move Russell Martin and his undeserved escalating salary.
I'm actually more bummed with giving up the live arm that is Elisaul Pimentel. A decent ERA (3.49) at Single-A, but almost 10 K's per nine means he has tremendous upside.
Way too much to give up for Podsednik. Not off to a good start this deadline season.

You're right. Way overpaid for two months of his services.
Lasorda's probably right, they aren't going to offer arb to anyone so this is going to pointless in the end.

Well it's in the wind that the Phillies just signed Oswalt.

Now they've got twice the Roy to dish out.

Maholm ain't gonna cut it. If the Dodgers don't get Lilly, confidence in ticket sales is going to fade fast.

Everybody knew this deadline season was going to be a king-size drag for the D. Now way out.

Missed out on Cliff Lee x3, Missed out on Holladay x2, missed out on Haren, missed out on Oswalt, fuck it get Carlos Zambrano in here with something to prove...seriously if there is one pitcher left with the stuff of an ace its Z. He can be had for a bag of peanuts so Frank's divorce cant hinder the team from making this deal. Zambrano will be good and pissed off trying to prove to the world that he is the man...we are getting desperate ourselves and both need each other to make things happen, the Cubs will eat more than half of his salary and Ned will send over McDonald, Elbert, and our pothead extradaniare Lambo.

Torre handles head cases, and well, Padilla has gone from most hated man in baseball, to model citizen...with the exception of time where Rowand stuck his face in front of his fastball, seriously giants keep throwing at us and we will send Posey to the hospital with a fucking concusion, hence ruining your offense. DO IT.

I wouldn't touch Milton Bradley with a 10 foot pole. He's a good guy and all, but like the Tasmanian Devil. He sees a water bottle and freaks out.

Zambrano's passionate and still tries to maintain respect amongst his teammates. However, after Bradley, that's like talking about Sheets after Schmidt. The chemistry in the dugout is good for the Dodgers. That's one thing going for them. Also, Z's good but I don't think he's any where near 3 years at $18 mil good. Cliff Lee's ERA is a good point under Big Z and costs half the price.

Cubs overpay their player more than the Yankees do in terms of return. That's why they can't improve. They better just pray their players come around cuz they're stuck.

The divorce won't last beyond this year...hopefully.

Theirot and Lilly, where are we going to play Theriot, when Dewitt is playing better???? After losing to the Padres I understand gettting someone who can hit, besides Andre's ONE clutch hit, our offense sucked, and sucks!

The end is coming for Belliard, if Theriot comes over in the deal. Then as Reed Johnson and Manny get healthy, Xavier Paul is sent back down and Garrett Anderson is DFA'd. It's not a bad trade at all, if it happens.

user-pic

Theriot = Carroll but we have the better version, Belliard is the only one on the bench who could possibly hit a bomb, possibly. This deal would make no sense having Theriot and Carroll sitting next to each other on the bench with Posednik along with Johnson and Ausmus that makes our bench pretty damn weak. Belliard is an improvement you want to replace him give me someone like Branyan not Theriot.

user-pic

Theriot is step sideways. We wouldn't go after him independently. It's what the Cubs want. If Lilly wasn't so important to the Dodgers, Theriot wouldn't be in deal. The Dodgers are steadily becoming a team of 5 DeWitts.

I agree that I'd still like having Belliard on the bench. He's pretty clutch and is the only one with pop. Anderson get's hits, but his bat speed is pretty slow.

I'd still like to see Paul in the game before Reed Johnson.

And overall, we really need more bullpen help than anything. I don't know why Colletti hasn't addressed that yet.

Theriot will be our starting second baseman for the next two years, and Dewitt was having a better season.

Lilly wont make us that much better but at least we wont have to watch Monsasterios and anyone else we can think of pitch in the fifth spot. Kershaw, Kuroda, Lilly and Bills in playoffs...Padilla right now is pitching better than Kuroda.

Dotel shores up the bullpen IMO, McD was useless to us and we could have sold a lot higher several years ago, Lambo is a pothead who would rather smoke dope than play ball...no loss there. Kept our core top prospects on the team.

Please trade Manny for Flowers in Chi, or their stud 3b, or to the rays for Wade Davis!

Padilla is a bull. I thought he'd have a good season, but he's doing better than I expected (so far).

Dotel looks like an alright bid, but...Don't the Dodgers need a lefty? I'm a bit skeptical about this one, but Colletti is the man. But I'm totally on board about the prospects. McD isn't going anywhere right now and Lambo's number aren't very intelligent - heavy power and a mediocre average...in the minors.

I get the feeling Lilly's going to kick ass from a change in environment. Plus, he's coming over with a teammate. Ned's always been good about team chemistry, something that DePodesta lacked.

I will miss DeWitt a bit, but something's gotta change and I would rather trade him than Martin. I hope Martin's offensive numbers shore up because he's a really good catcher and teammate.

user-pic

I'd resign Padilla to another one year deal for 6-7 mil, he can anchor the back end of the rotation that will look familiar
1. Kershaw
2. Need to Find Replacement for Kuroda
3. Bills
4. Padilla
5. Ely/Miller

If Lilly pitches well in pitcher friendly Dodger Stadium and can secure his type A status then we will certainly offer him arbitration, if he takes it we throw him in the three slot and put Bills #2, still doesnt knock my socks off, but can only hope Bills has refound himself and Kershaw continues to progress like he has. The whole goal the last three years is to have a kick ass 1 and 2, such as SF, Phi, Atl, StL, NY, Bos, making us elite, Kershaw is definetly a future ace but isnt quite yet, maybe next year he makes a run at Cy Young. But is Bills an elite two, no, he was, but lost it, and maybe now found it.

DePodesta sucked monkey nuts as set this club back a couple years, Hee Sop Choi, JDDrew, Milton Bradley, makes Ned look like Einstein.

Farewell BlakeD, I liked your hustle, play and atttempts to get better, you were rushed too soon, and then jerked around and lost last year. You had my vote to man second base seeing at it wasnt that important a position. I was hoping for more pop, and your glove cost us some games, but your young and I was down to stick with you. But like I said it wasnt an important position and since we have so much money we can afford to spend it on a player that costs more than you and isnt having a better season. But if Theriot puts up 08-09 numbers then Im down with that too.

Was really excited for a moment at the prospect of trading Manny, we would get something in return instead of really nothing, we are pretty much out of it and unless we put together a rockies ending it doestn look too good from here. Manny to TB or Chi and hopefully we would get one solid top ten prospect. Would Manny clear waivers? I think he might and he could still be worth a trade.

user-pic

There were some interesting names floated around for Manny, none of them may be true and some I read from other bloggers, but other teams fans thought Manny's value could net one of BJUpton, Tyler Flowers, Dayan Viciedo, Wade Davis, does he have that value? He wont net one of those guys after the deadline those prospects would never clear waivers.

I agree. Lambo is totally expendable, but using him to get a piece that will not make any difference this year was not the best move. In fact, none of these moves were very good.
