With the Dodgers actively pursuing outfield help, what does that say about the expected impact of Manny Ramirez?
What it says to me is that A) they don't expect much from Manny for the rest of this season if he is healthy and, B) he might not be healthy enough to get to 300 at-bats.
Furthermore, what does it say about Xavier Paul? It says the Dodgers don't think he's ready to play on a regular basis and it also says he might be used as a trade chip for pitching, and if that's the case, you have to get another outfielder, or two.
The Dodgers are rumored to be looking at Scott Podsednik, Cody Ross and Ryan Raburn, as most Dodger fans are well aware of.
The Podsednik move, to me, is ho hum. I could take it or leave it. He's a nice player and would feature well at the top of the order with Furcal, and he's a nice speed/defensive option off the bench if Manny somehow does come back and produce.
Podsednik would only cost about $650K for the rest of the year, but I wouldn't give up more than just a mid-level prospect to get him. And they better offer him arbitration because if he accepts, he'll be cheap and if he doesn't he'll net them a draft pick because he lines up as a type B free agent.
The Dodgers have messed this up recently, but with the unsigned first rounder, the Dodgers could be in line to have quite a few picks next year. In fact, this is the best thing that would come out of trading for Ted Lilly, because he would very likely decline arbitration. Lilly is a Type A free agent.
We've talked about Cody Ross already and he'd be a nice addition because he'd be there in 2011. The Marlins look unlikely to deal him with Chris Coghlan hurt.
Ryan Raburn does very little for me other than the fact he's under team control for a while. He might be a decent fourth OF for a few years.
If the Dodgers acquire outfield help, Manny could become a right handed bat off the bench if he can't handle playing every day. His time in LA is drawing to a close and it'll be nice to turn the page.
The moves the Dodgers seem poised to make aren't sexy, but could end up making a difference for this season and next.

We will not offer Lilly arb if we didnt offer Wolf, they are the same player, Raburn sucks, Posednick makes me wonder why we got rid of Pierre, but I would welcome Scotty as a true 4th outfielder. Xavier Paul sucks and is overrated, not doing much to float my boat, was higher on him last year, he has had opportunity but done nothing with it.
Bye Manny thanks for those two awesome months, and then Frank decides to overspend on you when your juicing.
Ned didnt have a choice to resign Manny, McCourt saw dollars coming from him from Manny wigs and Mannywood, just backfired in his face. Manny in the lineup consistently helps it significantly but without we would need someone other than Paul, Anderson, Posedniek, even Reed.
don't think manny factors much the rest of the way...
Manny was a waste of money. McCourt was blinded by merchandising. After Boras gave a third rejection, I would've told him to shove it. Dodger fans would've cried, but the rest of baseball would've respected McCourt showing Borass up especially after the drug thing.
Posednik is going to turn out like Anderson, like Belliard, like Carroll. A 'huh?' maneuver that Dodger fans are starting to get used to.
Paul's alright, but Posednik's a solid .300 hitter with speed. Him and Furcal could be interchangeable at the front of a lineup.
Since we're in KC...GET FARNSWORTH NED!! Use the hamstring sprain as a bargaining chip!! It won't matter in September.
If they do that and nab Lilly, they might actually be a team worth watching. Cuz right now they have ZERO swagger. They could win 5 in a row and would look like they have no confidence.
Upgrading the bench with a speedster who can swipe a bag is key for playoffs, but playoffs?, your talking about playoffs? PLAYOFFS? We dont currently have a team capable of being in the top two in the West and Ned's thinking about playoffs? Playoffs?
Lilly would help, but currently when our starting pitching has around a 1.00 ERA over the last seven games, our offense starts to suck like the big balls in wipeout. Tonight is a must win to get some of that swagger that Max is talking about.
