We’ve all heard the Hiroki Kuroda and Jamey Carroll rumors, and both have lent very little to discussion. The speculation is that both are sought after and could be traded, but we haven’t seen anything more than speculation on what teams could be interested in the duo.
The fact is that just about any player that can net a return should be traded. There are very few that shouldn’t be put on the trading block, and for most people one of those players is Andre Ethier.
But I think the Dodgers should trade the right-fielder. People may call me crazy, but I think Ethier should be dealt.
Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw are not going anywhere, but other than that, there isn’t one player on the Major League roster that I feel should be spared if there are asked about and can net a return to help the club in 2013. Let’s face it, that’s the earliest we are going to see this team compete.
Ethier isn’t happy in Los Angeles, so the chances of re-signing him are looking slim. With him being under team control through next season, there will be plenty of opportunity to trade him, but I say now is the time to look into a trade. In fact, I think packaging Ethier with Kuroda is something that any contender would be interested in.
The Red Sox are interested in Kuroda and would be interested in Ethier. This team likely would not want to subtract from its Major League roster, but Jacoby Ellsbury and a prospect for Kuroda and Ethier could work. Ethier would slot into right field in Boston, and Josh Reddick could slide to center. Boston would have to replace their leadoff guy, but with Ethier in the lineup (can you imagine how he’d mash with that protection?!?) and Kuroda in the rotation, they will be compensated well.
I don’t think the prospect could be Jose Iglesias, Anthony Renaudo or Drake Britton, but Lars Anderson would be a nice replacement for James Loney and would give Anderson a place to go where he might play. Will Middlebrooks and Stolmy Pimentel would also be options. If Ellsbury would be untouchable, even in a trade as such, then three prospects, including two of the top three, might suffice.
The Dodgers need a catcher, and Jesus Montero has been waiting for a place to play. Ethier and Kuroda for Montero and another prospect (Andrew Brackman, Graham Stoneburner, etc…) could do the trick. Ethier in the Yankees lineup would also be ridiculous and the Yankees would have some rotation protection after C.C. Sabathia.
Ethier and Kuroda for Brennan Boesch and Jacob Turner. Boesch is a poor man’s Andre Ethier and one day could replace his production, and Turner would give the Dodgers a top starter to slot in after Kershaw in a year or two. Ethier is worth Turner, in case anybody thinks I am saying that it’s Kuroda for Turner.
The Indians have said that Lonnie Chisenhall, Jason Kipnis and Drew Pomeranz are untouchable. Well, they could REALLY, REALLY use Ethier and Kuroda. The rotation is young and showing signs of not being ready for a playoff push, while having Sizemore and Choo out is going to effect offensive production to the point where they could fall out of the race. It will take two of those guys to get both Ethier and Kuroda.
Could you imagine Ethier in Texas with that lineup around him? Texas could definitely upgrade in the rotation with Kuroda and with those two players, they are a legit threat to get back to the World Series. I’m asking for Jurickson Profar or Martin Perez, and David Murphy.
The Arizona farm system is pretty loaded, and with Ethier being an Arizona guy, there could be a fit. The D’backs really need an upgrade in the rotation and Kuroda provides that, and with those two, the team could challenge the Giants. The D’backs could shed a little salary as well and include Chris Young in the deal, and play Gerardo Parra in center and Ethier in left. Jarrod Parker, Tyler Skaggs or Matt Davidson would have to be a part of the deal.
The Reds need pitching help and need it badly. Kuroda helps that rotation right away. They could also use Ethier in the outfield with Bruce and Stubbs. I’m thinking Yonder Alonso or Devin Mesoraco and Edinson Volquez would work quite nicely.
Another contender that needs pitching help, and Ethier in that lineup would make it ridiculous. Corey Hart slides to centerfield in this scenario. This tea could also use Carroll, or Rafael Furcal. The Brewers farm system is not great, so it would take quite a few prospects to make it work and I think enough quality guys could entice the Dodgers to send three players to Milwaukee.
Philadelphia is always a mover at the trade deadline, and are certainly looking for outfield help. Could you imagine Kuroda in the rotation with Halladay, Lee, Hamels and Oswalt? Dear lord. Domonic Brown, Jonathan Singleton or Jarred Cosart would have to be in that trade. Sebastian Valle is a decent catching prospect that could compliment the deal.
The Braves are looking for an OF bat, and could certainly upgrade with Kuroda. Julio Teharan or Arodys Vizcaino would need to be in the deal and the Braves might have to leverage a little future to win now.
